Review: Myst Disappoints on DS

Posted by wowgoldeu on 30th August 2008

The original CD-ROM version of
Myst will always hold a special place in my gaming heart. I spent countless hours staring at its beautiful images, wracking my brain for the solution to its devious puzzles. I look on it with the forgiving fondness that only a distance of many years can provide, choosing to overlook its faults in favor of reminiscing about its joys.

I was excited to learn that this gem from my past had been given new life on the Nintendo DS. I looked forward to seeing my old friend again, so many years after we had last parted company. I was eager to revisit my Myst experiences, and curious to see how the game had weathered the jump from CD-ROM to DS.

I regret to inform you that it barely survived the journey.

I first played Myst on my 3DO, and although its graphics were eye-meltingly gorgeous for the time, that was more than ten years ago. Despite the diminutive size of the DS screen, I still expected the scenery of Myst to come through relatively unscathed, but such is simply not the case.

The graphics are cramped and pixelated, and if I hadn’t spent more time than I care to ponder burning Myst’s images into my brain, I wouldn’t have known what I was looking at in many instances. I have no idea what mystical mojo was done to the official press screenshots you see in this review, but trust me, the game simply does not look that good.

Image0012
A zoom function remedies the situation somewhat, allowing you to take a closer look at objects and locations. Tap the magnifying glass icon at the bottom of your screen, and you’ll get a close-up view on the top screen. The journals or signs you’ll find as you wander around Myst’s Ages are impossible to read without it, so it’s a welcome addition to your abilities.

The sound fared slightly better, but only just. What sounded majestic and grand in the original is now tinny and shrill, but the speakers on the DS can’t really compare to those in your living room. Still, I missed the big "fwaaaawummm wum wummm" noise whenever I traveled through a book.

The controls, as simple as they are, are extremely frustrating. Unlike most adventure games, you don’t solve puzzles in Myst by toting items around with you, amassing an inventory of flotsam and jetsam, you simply point and click  to manipulate whatever is in front of you at the time. Movement is similarly controlled by pointing where you want to go and clicking.

The pointing and clicking translates into tapping the screen in the DS version, but mushy reactions and random lag make navigation a chore and some puzzles more difficult than they really need to be. It’s not a constant problem, but you’ll find yourself furiously jabbing your stylus at the screen more than once, I assure you.

Even the aspects of the game that are improvements over the original are still a bit of a letdown. A camera lets you snap pictures, which can make solving puzzles much easier, but you can only keep one picture at a time. You can jot down information in a notebook, but the typewriteresque interface is clunky doesn’t take full advantage of the touch screen. To update your first note, for example, you can’t move your cursor by touching the text with your stylus, you have to backspace up to it, erasing whatever notes followed it.

If you’ve never played Myst before, don’t, I beseech you, try it on the DS. The awful graphics and mushy touch screen controls will make solving the mystery of Atrus, Cirrus and Achenaar unfairly tedious and frustrating. It’s easy enough to find on CD, so do that instead. You still may not like it, but at least you’ll be judging the game on its true merits.

For anyone familiar with Myst, playing the DS version is kind of like running into your high school sweetheart at a class reunion, only to discover that they’re not quite as good looking or charming as you remember them. Do yourself a favor: Steer clear of Myst DS and keep your memories pure.

Rumor: Shinji Mikami’s unannounced Sega game could feature Suda 51

Posted by wowgoldeu on 30th August 2008

event.jpg

Shinji Mikami (of Resident Evil fame) has an unannounced project with Sega as part of the Platinum Games deal. On the 22nd of this month, Grass Hopper holdings had an event to celebrate their 10th anniversary as a company. Shinji Mikami was there and talked a bit about his future project.

“I can not talk about details, but I’m working right now with Suda.”

It wasn’t confirmed if it is part of the Sega and Platinum Games unannounced project, but if Simon Jeffery is to be believed, Sega has exclusive rights to the studio. Though Shinji can work under Grasshopper Manufacturing.

Let’s hope Suda 51 (Killer 7 and No More Heroes) and Shinji Mikami do team up for the upcoming title. Filed under rumor for now, stay tuned as we wait to find out more.

Just a Bit of Hope for Haze

Posted by wowgoldeu on 30th August 2008

Mike posted a Haze promo video that about gave me nightmares.

Since I’ve been looking forward to Haze since way back, I had to find a video that presented the game in a more flattering light.

Nodame Cantabile: Dream Orchestra, Kawaii Mongoose, Classical Music, Crazy Mini Games

Dream Orchestra, Kawaii Mongoose, Classical Music, Crazy Mini Games

Sometimes is just hard to find certain Wii games in my country, Singapore. Most of the hard to find Wii games are usually those Japanese Wii games that seldom debut in other countries. One such game is Nodame Cantabile: Dream Orchestra for the Wii. In short, Nodame Cantabile is about classical music. Highly popular in Japan and Asia in 2007, you can find Nodame Cantabile in anime, manga, drama and video games. I particularly like the main female character, Noda Megumi (Nodame).

Nodame - Played by Juri Ueno

Ok, back to the game. The game allows you to make use of your Wiimote and Nunchuck to “play” different musical instruments such as the piano, violin, drums, oboe, cello, clarinet, flute and of course, have fun being a conductor. Get on the beat and your music meter will go up. Sort of hitting a button in Guitar Hero III but this time, you shake your Wiimote (and Nunchuck) or press some buttons on the Wiimote to hit the right note. The actions which you carry out will resemble the way of playing the real musical instrument in real life. 4 people can form something like a band to play a music piece at the same time.

Besides playing the piano, Nodame also loves the Puri Gorota anime.

What’s Nodame Cantabile: Dream Orchestra without Puri Gorota mini games?

Strictly speaking, this game is for Nodame fans only. You can’t find the exhilaration similar to Guitar Hero or Rock Band but if you like classical music and simple yet cute gameplay, then Nodame Cantabile: Dream Orchestra is the game for you.

Rare: Viva Pinata DS/360 Connectivity Functional, Scrapped

Posted by wowgoldeu on 30th August 2008

Vptrouble_05

Developers working on the Xbox 360’s upcoming Viva Pinata: Trouble In Paradise actually created technology capable of linking the Xbox 360 game with the Nintendo DS’ soon-to-be-released Viva Pinata title, according to MTV’s Multiplayer Blog.

Unfortunately, “We got it to work, but it was too late in the development cycle,” said VP designer Justin Cook. “It’s one of those things where you just kick yourself,” he added.

I can’t imagine whatever connectivity features would have sprung from that unholy marriage would have been all that compelling — inter-console connectivity rarely is — but it still would have been a nice option if only so gamers could experience the risqué joy of linking a Nintendo handheld to a Microsoft console.

Talk about taboo.

Funcom Celebrates Age of Conan Launch With New Trailer

Posted by wowgoldeu on 30th August 2008

To celebrate Tuesday’s launch of Age of Conan, Funcom has released the game’s official launch trailer to the teeming internet masses.

Tuesday’s launch was especially notable as it marked the first major MMO launch in recent history that didn’t result in the game’s servers collapsing under the initial player rush.

Though Funcom hasn’t released information on how many players the game has so far accrued, or how many people logged onto the game this week, the performance of AoC during its first few days of life was remarkably smooth. In a genre where massive server failures and horrible, gamebreaking glitches are the expectation, Age of Conan remained solid and playable.

It’s still too early for Funcom to claim victory over its competitors, but it’s certainly doing an excellent job so far.

Samba de Amigo Wii: first trailer

Posted by wowgoldeu on 30th August 2008

IGN got their paws on a trailer for the new Samba de Amigo Wii game, and, well, it’s Samba de Amigo! On the Wii!

At times like these I think a simple description of the events that transpire within is due:

A family, bored of board games (I know!) have their humdrum afternoon mercifully interrupted when the doorbell rings. They open the door to a magical monkey holding maracas, who then whisks them back to their TV like a good American family where they make complete asses of themselves playing Samba de Amigo with newly confirmed Mii integration.

I know it sounds snarky, but truth be told it’s a pretty accurate depiction of how people looked playing the original on the Dreamcast. I guess it only took us, what, nine years to reach this point again?

Dr. Petter’s 116 Unfinished Games of Delight and Madness

Posted by wowgoldeu on 30th August 2008

116 Unfinished Games - Small

DrPetter, the brilliant mind behind sfxr, was inspired by the awesome Unfinished Game Demo/Dump thread on TIGForums and decided to contribute a mosaic of 116 of his own unfinished creations.

The games listed span from 1995 to 2008, which I guess corresponds to half my life (born 1982).

You can see the full image here (3 mb) – wow, is that ever fun to look at! DrPetter has also written short descriptions for each of the games (some of which can be played at his website)!

Definitely check out the rest of the dumps, too. You might not think it, but it’s quite inspiring (and entertaining) to see people’s unfinished work. I’m considering contributing some games to it myself!
